The Geelong Football League and Eastern Football League are pleased to announce that they have been afforded the opportunity to play the 2018 first versus second AFL Victoria WorkSafe Community Championship game at Etihad Stadium as a curtain-raiser to the St.Kilda vs. Collingwood AFL game on Saturday, May 19.

Both leagues have welcomed the opportunity to showcase the best community talent and are thrilled that the AFL will support such a game at community level.

Region General Manager of AFL Barwon Lee Hartman said “This is another outstanding opportunity for the Geelong FL to put their team out on a major stage, this game previously has been a great pathway for players to be recognised and created opportunities into the VFL system and even the AFL draft.

“For the AFL to support community football is a great thing and after being ranked number-one for five years now, we know we will have to select our best side to take it up to a very strong Eastern FL, we welcome this challenge and to make the game a showcase event.”

Eastern FL Chief Executive Officer Phil Murton, also excited by the opportunity, said “Our players and coaches will no doubt look forward to the opportunity of taking on the GFL again, who have been the benchmark in representative football for the last few years.

“Playing at an elite venue will enhance the spectacle and will be a great experience for all involved and we thank the AFL for their support of this.”
