It was Doncaster in a boil-over against the reigning premiers in Division 1, defeating South Croydon by five points at Schramms Reserve in one of the matches of the season.

The Bulldogs led at all changes and by as much as 26 points late in the third quarter before the Sharks responded with six final quarter goals – including five in a row up to the 20-minute-mark as Alessi put his side in front for the first time since late in the opening term.

South Croydon hit back shortly after as Michael ‘Zippy’ King booted his first major to wrestle back the lead by a point, but Doncaster continued to press, with the upset all but certain when Rambaldi kicked truly at the 28-minute-mark to ensure the five-point victory.

In Division 2, Upper Ferntree Gully upset Doncaster East by seven points at Kings Park, in a tight struggle which saw scores level at the final change. A slow start by the Lions was quickly overcome in the second term, kicking three goals to one to take the lead by eight points at the main break. The home side proved too good in the second half however, kicking five goals to two, with Tom Meagher named among the best in his side’s win.

Meanwhile, in Division 3, Ferntree Gully recorded a 14-point win over Donvale after trailing by 15 points at quarter time. Kieran Gray finished with four majors for the Eagles, along with Chris Cox booting two. Up the mountain, it was South Belgrave running out comfortable winners over Warrandyte by 54 points, courtesy of five goals from Alex Bakens.

Forest Hill has returned to the winners’ list in Division 4, recording a 13-point victory over Coldstream on the wide expanses of Coldstream Reserve. The Zebras trailed by five points at halftime before edging in front by two points at three quarter time, before weathering the Cougars’ storm in the final term. Laws finished with three majors for Forest Hill, while Carrigan booted five for Coldstream.
