Ringwood Junior Football Club president Steve Bricknell spoke to EFL Media ahead of the 2018 season, all thanks to Yarra Valley Water and Choose Tap.

Overall, were you satisfied with what the club achieved, both on and off the field, in 2017?

Steve Bricknell: In 2017, Ringwood began the rebuild of the junior club with its first ever under-8s team. This was incredibly successful both on and off the field.

The team was coached by one of the senior players, Jake Keogh, and every Friday night at training there were different senior players from the club coming down to help run the night.

The kids really loved this and felt a connection with the club and the senior players. This led to a multitude of juniors running out as ‘mascots’ with the seniors each week and an all around good club vibe. A great club attitude was achieved on and off the field and we are looking to build on that further.

Approximately how many teams do you think you will field in 2018?

SB: After a really strong Friday night Auskick program in 2017, the club is looking at fielding four teams – Two under-8s, one under-9s and an under-10 girls. With the girls team being a first for the club.

What has the feeling been like around the club over the pre-season?

SB: There has been great excitement in the pre-season with families and kids keen to get back into footy.

The club had a grid game at half time during the AFLW, which made many of the kids even more excited to get back and play footy again.

A focus for the club has been the mateship around footy, it’s not all about winning and losing, it’s about having fun with your friends. With that in mind, many of the kids have been hanging out for footy to start so that they can see their friends that may not go to the same school as them.

The club has also been helping with clinics through the EFL at Great Ryrie and Our Ladies Primary School, which has created more excitement for many kids looking to play footy this year.

If you had to pick one, which team do you think is the club’s best chance of winning a premiership this season?

SB: The teams that are fielded do not play for points yet, so no premiership will be up for grabs. However, we are looking forward to seeing our under-9s in their second season together compete for the lightning premiership. Throughout 2017, the number of kids in the team nearly doubled and they improved significantly every single week, so they will definitely be a team to watch throughout the year.

Is there a particular age group of players that you need as soon as possible to fill a team ahead of Round 1?

SB: As the under-10s girls team is new for the club, we are focusing on filling that team for the year ahead. However, we also have a strong focus on getting as many kids in the under-8s and 9s out on the park for the 2018 season.

If any players are interested in playing for Ringwood this season, what do they have to do?
