21 DAYS TO GO | Waverley Blues junior president Mark Frescher spoke to EFL Media ahead of the 2019 season, all thanks to Yarra Valley Water & Choose Tap.

Overall, were you satisfied with what the club achieved, both on and off the field, in 2018?

Mark Frescher: The club fielded 10 junior teams with all players representing the club with passion, perseverance and good sportsmanship. But more importantly best of all enjoying the competitive spirit football brings, building new friendships and being a part the local community.

A fantastic outcome this year having six out of seven competitive teams making finals – under-11s, 12s, 13s, 14s, 15s and 17s.

As a club we should be very proud of this achievement, as there are many other teams who would love to get the opportunity to play finals.  The club ended up with two premiers (under-12s and 13s) with the under-12s going back-to-back premiers.

Congratulations to all the girls who took to the field as part of the inaugural Waverley Blues under-14 girls team. An amazing year, it was great watching them develop but to just miss out on finals by percentage, shows just how much they improved.

Approximately how many teams do you think you will field in 2019?

MF: We should field 11 teams this year, including two girls sides.

What has the feeling been like around the club over the pre-season?

MF: Pre-season has been very encouraging with many of the older age groups starting before the Christmas break, mainly concentrating on fitness, strengthening and conditioning.

Finding available grounds has been a challenge, thankfully there are many wonderful parks in close proximity.

If you had to pick one, which team do you think is the club’s best chance of winning a premiership this season, and why?

MF: All teams are a chance of making finals again this year. Under-13s are looking strong again this year, looking to make it 3 flags in a row.

Is there a particular age group of players that you need as soon as possible to fill a team ahead of Round 1?

MF: Still looking for players for the following ages – under-9s, 10s, 11s, 12s, 13s, 14s, 15s, under-14 girls and under-16 girls.

If any players are interested in playing for your club this season, what do they have to do?

MF: All registration inquiries please call Cathy on 0419 365 060 or email: waverleybluesjnr@efnl.org.au

Or specifically under-14 girls and under-16 girls, please contact Tony on 0408 295 766, or email: waverleybluesjnr@efnl.org.au
